History of the Department of Bengali:

Rammohan College formerly was known as City College Womens’ Department since 1943 to May 1961. In June 1961, it get the status of independent college. Bengali, as a subject was taught in I.A, B.A (Pass &Hons) & P.U in the then City College Womens’ Department. Bengali Department was formed in 1961. Since inception, Bengali was a subject affiliated to Calcutta University for the general and Honours in the Degree Course. Later, in 2014 Calcutta University extended affiliation in PG course in Bengali. Bengali as a subject was also taught in H.S.(1976-2000) in Rammohan College. 

 

In the beginning, the following teachers were attached to Bengali Department:-

  • Karabi Dasgupta
  • Baruna Bhattacharya
  • Jyotsna Gupta
  • Sri Bibhuti Bhusan Chowdhury

Later, the following teachers enriched the department:

  • Uma Maitra
  • Chhaya Dasgupta

 

Besides teaching, they were also devoted in all types of literary activities, important publications which are found to be the treasure  of Bengali literature.

They have been maintaining the glorious past of Bengali Department. Teachers are regularly involved with research works and research-based writing to gather academic knowledge(details kept in personal profile).

Bengali department has introduced an M.A. course in the year 2014.
