About The Department

The Department of Philosophy is one of the initial departments of our College which was established in 1961. The department has always a good academic record. Some of the pioneering teachers of this Department were Prof. Geeta Ghosh, Prof. Amitabha Khastagir, Prof. Smita Chatterjee, Prof. Indira Bandyopadhyay and Prof. Manidipa Sanyal.

Currently the department offers Philosophy Honours under new CBCS curriculum of 2018, Philosophy Core Courses and Generic Elective are offered. The Department has staff strength of five faculties. Among the five faculty members, three have been awarded M.Phil. Apart from teaching activities Faculty members regularly attend Seminar, Workshops, Present research papers in national and international seminar and publish their papers in peer reviewed Journals and Books. The department regularly engaged in academic exercises like class wise seminar, debate and prepares students for Quiz Competition, Departmental Wall-Magazine, Group discussion and educational trips etc. Students are encouraged to participate in extension activities like NSS, recitation, singing, dancing and similar other activities. Students of the department have won several prestigious awards in Students’ Seminar held in other Colleges. Moreover the department organized special tutorial classes for improving the academic performance of the students. Regular parent-teacher meeting is held to discuss about the progress of the students. The faculty members are always ready to render all possible assistance and guidance to students within and outside the campus as and when required. Overall, a healthy academic environment and a cordial teacher student relation are maintained in the department. A Philosophy Honours Graduate has various options to choose for their higher studies such as Post Graduation in Philosophy, Law, Mass Communication, Journalism, Management Studies, Film Studies and Computer Science etc. Teaching in (School, College and Universities), Psychological counsellor, W.B.C.S, I.A.S, P.O. of Bank, - these fields are open for her to choose as Profession.
