When we educate a person, only an individual is educated, but if we educate a woman –we educate the whole family. Perhaps the  illustrious group of patriotic and selfless leaders of Brahmo Samaj, founded by Raja Rammohan Roy thought similarly. Rammohan College owes its origin to City College, University of Calcutta which was one of the oldest first grade colleges in West Bengal. In 1943 the City College started a section for the women students which was inaugurated in the same building at 102, Raja Rammohan Roy Sarani. It started as a morning college with IA and BA classes while B.Sc classes commenced after 1947. In 1961, women’s section of City College was separately affiliated in 1961 to the Calcutta University and renamed as Rammohan College.

The aim of the college is to promote the cause of education in its highest and widest sense, to make education a comprehensive training of the mind, heart and body and founded on theistic basis conducive to the good of the masses. The college is open to all students irrespective of race, creed or caste.

Rammohan College has gone through 62 glorious years of existence, carrying the legacy of spreading quality education to all sections of society. Both teaching and non teaching staff always work together creating a co-operative atmosphere. The committed faculty, through their dedication guide and help the students in their endeavour to develop into good human beings and productive members of society.
